Why do we put giant rocks in culverts?
Just to mirror the other two answers, it’s very common for engineers to specify that ditches be lined with riprap upstream of a culvert’s inlet (5–10 feet) and downstream of its outlets (10–20 feet or more) to dissipate water energy and allow silt to drop out.
